An artist attracted to old cinema and Afro-Futurism, DANIEL OBASI is a Nigerian-born photographer deeply concerned with advancing the scope of African narratives.

Consistently working and drawing inspiration from his lived experiences, conversations and research, Daniel seeks to explore subject matters like sexuality, masculinity, beauty, cultural symbolism, fantasy, activism and human relations. Daniel Obasi’s works birth a certain idealism to Afrocentric concepts; whimsical, ethereal, soft yet sensual and powerfully contrasting with sharp silhouettes, colours and stories.

ABOUT THE IMAGE

I personally can’t swim, but I have this daunting obsession with water as an element. Maybe because of its fluid nature but sometimes it can be still and stiff… firm and delicate, sort of glass like. My approach to masculinity is just like that.

As he commands the wind  is from a poem that I am developing around a character who seats by the water contemplating his fate, his beginning, his journey and his end.
